Detectors
Flow Injection Analysis can utilize a variety of detection types to best analyze different assays. Detection types include colorimetric, fluorometric, amperometric, potentiometric detection, and more. See the FIAlab Methods List below for more information on which assays use which detectors.
Colorimetric Detectors
Flame Spectrometer
The Flame spectrometer is built using industry-leading manufacturing techniques that help deliver high thermal stability and low unit-to-unit variation — without compromising the flexibility and configurability that are the hallmark of Ocean Insight miniature spectrometers. New features such as interchangeable slits, indicator LEDs, and simple device connectors deliver more freedom and less frustration.
A majority of FIAlab methods utilize colorimetric detection via the Flame spectrometer or low-noise MMS Spectrometer.
tec5 MMS Spectrometer
The MMS module series offers a compact design for detection between 310 to 1100 nm in a variety of wavelength ranges. It combines a high-quality silicon photodiode array with a high-efficiency, imaging-corrected grating. This spectrometer benefits low-level detection limits with its high signal-to-noise and improved sensitivity.

FIAlab primarily utilizes the Flame-T-UV-Vis and Flame-T-Vis-NIR models of the Flame Spectrometer series. The spectrometer utilized varies based on the assay(s) you wish to run.
Models
Part # 64018 Flame-T-UV-VIS
Part # Flame-T-VIS-NIR

Low Power Consumption - drawing <250mA at 5V, the Flame-NIR can be powered almost anywhere including in OEM portable and handheld devices and industrial process control environments.
Fluorometric Detection
Fluorometric detection is used in FIAlab’s EPA approved method for Ammonia and TKN analysis via OPA indicator.
PMT-FL
The PMT-FL Fluorometer is an ultra-sensitive, photomultiplier-based detection system designed for monitoring very low fluorescence, chemiluminescence, or bioluminescence emissions. The heavy-duty housing is chemically resistant and built to withstand industrial environments.
-
PMT-based ultra sensitivity fluorescence/chemiluminescence detector
The PMT- FL accepts either a flow through or a conventional quartz cuvette for manual sample handling. The detection limit is guaranteed to be 10 parts per trillion - obtained with Fluorescein @ 250 msec integration time and appropriate emission and excitation filters.
This product is compatible with all FIAlab's analyzers or with a mini peristaltic pump for manual operation. LEDs from 270 nm to 920 nm are available.

High Sensitivity Fluorescence Measurement
PMT Specifications: Photon counting PMT detector 310 nm - 750 nm spectral range.
Pulse pair resolution: 10 ns responsivity @ 400 nm: 5 X 1017 cps/Watt PMT dynamic range: 2.0E06
The PMT-FL is built to order with either an internal excitation lamp or an SMA-terminated fiber optic cable for use with an external lamp. Emission and excitation filters are mounted in user-accessible slots inside the enclosure, allowing for quick removal or exchange.
Additional Components:
Built-in bandpass excitation and/or emission filters. We offer numerous bandpass filters for fluorometric assays. These range from the UV through VIS.
Amperometric Detection
Amperometric Flow Cell and Electrode
Amperometric analysis is a highly sensitive detection technique applicable to redox-active analytes. The sample is brought in contact with an electrode that oxidizes/reduces the analyte, giving rise to an electric current proportionate to the concentration.
Amperometric detectors are an alternative to colorimetric detection for Cyanide determination.
Flame Photometric Detection
Flame Photometer
Photometric analysis entails directing the sample solution to a burner flame and measuring the characteristic color that ensues in the presence of metal ions. The technique is applicable to alkali and earth alkali metals.
Potentiometric Detection
Ion-Selective Electrode
Potentiometric analysis utilizes ion-selective electrodes that develop an electric potential in response to the ionic analyte that the electrode is specific for.
